Wyoming copter crash kills rescuer and snowmobiler

Associated Press
- Ray Shriver helped found a volunteer search and rescue group 19 years ago after he survived being buried in an avalanche. He even trained his own dogs for search and rescue missions.

On Wednesday, after participating in some 800 missions over the years with Teton County Search and Rescue, Shriver died when the helicopter he was riding in crashed while responding to a call for help from snowmobilers in the snowy, remote backcountry of northwest Wyoming.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating Wednesday's crash of the Bell 407 helicopter in Teton County, FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said. A snowmobiler involved in a separate accident - the one the rescue team was responding to - also died.

New Statewide SAR Radio Frequencies

E-mail Print PDF

Washington State has 2 new statewide SAR narrow band radio frequencies. These frequencies are available only for search and rescue operations, there are no other users licensed for them at this time. The current recognized SAR frequency (155.160) is still open to other emergency response agencies (Ambulance and tow companies). The Washington State EMD has posted an authorization letter that lists the frequencies, authorization and standardized naming. The frequencies are for use during actual SAR missions or authorized training missions. You must download the authorization letter and keep it on file while using the frequencies.

Core Competency Project Update 06-01-2011

Great News! On June 1, 2011, Skaminia County Sheriff Dave Brown advised that the Sheriff's Association voted to support the Core Competency Project and current document at their May meeting. This is a major milestone for this joint WSSARCA and SARVAC project that formally began (again) at the 2008 state SAR conference in Chelan County. Since then a combined group of SAR Volunteers and SAR Coordinators with the counsel of recognized national SAR experts have worked to come up with the current Core Competency Document.
